The Downward Trend in Employee Relocation Services

from:

In an effort to cut down on costs, many corporations are continuing to offer employee relocation services at progressively lower levels each year. This trend is certainly not uncommon in an era where just about everything is being downsized.

Over the last half-century, the packages offered many high-level employees and executives increasingly more comprehensive employee relocation services that are aimed at being part of a benefit package to lure them. Increasingly, this has involved services that cater to the needs of the family such as language training, help in finding schools and many different kinds of perks that make finding and furnishing a new home a lot easier.

One of the most extravagant perks that seems to be falling by the way side is the practice of using company money to purchase the home that's being abandoned so the new employee in question can concentrate on fitting into the new environment. While this particular aspect of employee relocation services is still practiced, it is now much more commonly offered only to executives of larger corporations.

Another aspect of this downsizing is the number of employees that are offered any type of employee relocation services at all. For many this might cover only a moving van (for domestic employees), a map and some materials on what is a nice place to begin looking for a home, or perhaps just a few days off before beginning work.

While this hardly could be considered much of an incentive, anything at all might be better than nothing for people who are looking to make a move anyhow. These types of downsized employee relocation services typically are offered to younger employees or those in non-executive positions.

One sector that seems to be relatively untouched by cuts in employee relocation services are diplomats and other federal (or less commonly, state) employees who are stationed throughout the United States and abroad. These moves are usually covered from one end to the other, though vacated homes are never actually purchased by a governmental agency or the State Department (for obvious reasons), but are very often sub-let for the duration of the assignment.

Only in the most competitive fields that naturally attract the best and brightest worldwide will you find unscathed employee relocation services being offered to non-executives. Technological firms very commonly use such services as part of the package they offer, often to young employees who are unlikely to have entire families to move, but who simply need a nearby location and the right work visa to get in and stay in.
